This is a typical day for a Bengali tourist in Puri. But Puri has something much more to offer than temple and beaches. Sterling Resort Puri offers an different experience of the age old pilgrimage.

So when I received the invitation, along with the itinerary, of the Puri FAM Tour I immediately said yes. I have visited Puri numerous time, and the last one was just two months back, but I still joined the tour to experience the age old Bengali holiday destination in a different way.

Sterling Holiday Resort is a leading holiday company in India. Established in 1986 today it houses 33 resorts spread over 30 locations across the country. Its 3000 + employs host over 15 lakh guest every year.

The Sterling Resort Puri is located 5 km from Swargadwar the heart of Puri’s tourist attraction.

It is located next to the sea mouth of River Dhaudia, which in turn is the distributary of River Bhargabi. The place is popularly known as Mohana (literally meaning sea mouth).

Welcome drink of tender coconut greeted us at the resort, approachable to a grand entrance. Two statues of Lord Jagannath and Lord Ganesh on the left of the entrance welcomed guest into the resort.

On the right is a small pit which houses sand sculptures. During our entry it exhibited a sand art of a baby elephant. Next the it changed to dancing dolphins. The resort authority informed that the sculptures were work of art by Nikunj Nayak.

They also informed us that the sculpture keep changing every 3 or 4 days and the guest can also practice the art, under the gudience of the sculptor, on the beach.

Since our visit was during the height of monsoon we had to drop the idea of testing our artistic skills.

The rooms of Sterling Resort Puri are classified under three types. First is the Sea View Privilege Suite next is the Sea View Classic Double and finally Premium Rooms.

The air conditioned rooms are well furnished and comes with felicities like mini bar, sitting area, free toiletries and many fore facilities. On the downsize the resort has minimal mobile phone network and wifi is not free.

The resort is centred around a irregular shaped swimming pool and the balconies provide a great view of the beach and the sea, along with the river Dhaudia sea mouth (mohana).

The resort also provides a small conference room and a large banquet. The banquet provides an ideal destination wedding platform.

A large portion of the Sterling Resort occupancy is through wedding and seminars but individual tourist who prefer to Holiday Differently often chose Sterling resort as their place of stay in the age old pilgrim centre of Puri.

Although located far from the Jagannath Temple the resort makes special arrangements for their guest for puja at the temple.

Also arrangement are made for guest to visit Swargadwar, the marketing hot spot of Puri, where people bargain more than they buy.

But the prime attraction of the Sterling Resort Puri is its solitude, you can have the golden sand beach all to yourself, something unimaginable just 5 km away. But the approach to the beach is a bit tricky as one has to cross a shallow but fast flowing backwater stream coming out of the Dhaudia River.

During monsoon (it coincided with our visit) the water can be really fast flowing and reach knee level. But once you hit the beach you are the “monarch of all I survey.” Apart from sand art activity the resort also curates other activities like beach volleyball and there are future plans of introducing adventure sports like zaipling.
