Gastropub is a pub that serves good food. The idea was first conceived in 1991 when the new owners of the Eagle Pub in London added a restaurant food menu to the existing pub drink menu.
Kolkata is changing fast and the changes in its food scenario is even more rapid. With themed restaurant opening every other day Kolkata finally came up with a Gastropub, named Wall Street Bar (WSB).
Located at the heart of the city, on Thearte Road (Shakespeare Sarani), the new gastropub started operating since September 2015. The bar license was still due and the pub served only veg food. The bar license was obtained in March 2016 and finally the Wall Street Pub started operating as gastropub.
On April 10, 2016 I was invited for a bloggers meet and food tasting session at Walls Street Bar (WSB) by its young entrepreneur Ayush Karel and the event was hosted by Candid Communication.
Located at the heart of the city on the Theatre Road (Shakespeare Road) the gastropub attracts the young corporate pubbing crowd from the adjoining business area. The Wall Street Bar (WSB) is located on the first floor of Shagun Mall and is approached my a stairway with interesting messages on both sides.
The 200 sq ft 50 seater Wall Street Bar (WSB) is dimly lit with cozy wooden decor. Interesting graphics with matching quotes adorn the walls.
Sadly the name has not much connection with New York’s famous financial hub but it is a great place for excellent beverages, food, hookah and entertainment.
The food menu gives special emphasis on Italian and Burmese, however Chinese, Continental and fusion cuisines are also on the menu.
Cocktails have always been the prime attraction for gastropubs and the Wall Street Bar (WSB) is no exception. Wall Street Special is served in a tall glass with cranberry and orange flavours and is topped with a cherry.
The non alcoholics are not forgotten in Wall Street Bar (WSB). The Gandhoraj Basil Mojito, a mocktail flavoured with Gandhoraj Lime and garnished with basil leaves is served in a glass barrel a treat not only for the taste buds but also for the eyes.

Since the Wall Street Bar (WSB) is located at the heart of the business district in Kolkata it attracts the young pubbing crowd for a quick lunch, so special importance has been given on finger food.
The Veg Cheese Fondue came in with a thick creamy flaminfg cheese dip along with crunchy bread cubes and sautéed vegetable. The Ginger Chicken Strips were crispy and garnished with coriander leaves.

The Bhetki Cupcakes were a innovation of Wall Street Bar’s Chef Dipak Kumar Majumdar. The baked bhetki chunk is served with chives cream topping crowned with a slice of lime. It tasted great but it was difficult getting rid of the paper wrapper of the cupcake. Also on the starter list was Baked Mushroom and Water Chest Nut in Plum Sauce.
The main course consisted of Khow Suey and Bhuna Masala Chicken Wing with Burnt Garlic Rice.
The Burmese dish of Khow Suey is a meal in itself. It comes in with a bowl of soup and crispy fried noodles. The noddles needs to be added to the soup and garnished with pea nuts, deep fried onions and ginger and with a dash of lime. It generally serves two
Bhuna Masala Chicken Wing with Burnt Garlic Rice is also a meal in itself and is served with salad. The dish contains two pieces of chicken wings and can serve two person.
Like all good things, the bloggers meet and food tasting session at Wall Street Pub finally came to an end and as we bid farewell to fellow bloggers a social message at the exit attracted my attention, “Don’t Drink and Drive.”
