“At Hoppipola there’s room for every one to be happy – the loud ones, the quiet ones, the giggly ones, the crying ones, the sighing ones, the huffing ones and the puffing ones, the lonely ones, the ones in love, the boardroom to the ‘boreroom’ ones, the bookworms, the gammers, the drinkers, the claimers, the ones that hate leaving home and the ones that haven’t seen home for a while.”

Hoppipola is the newest brand of restaurants from the basket of Speciality Restaurants Limited, India’s largest chain of fine dinning restaurant.

The experience offered by Hoppipola goes beyond dinning and its a place to eat, drink & play and ultimately be hoppi.

The first experience at Hoppipola is that of a play school rather than a restaurant.

The wall on the left of the entrance is studded with brightly coloured bioscope boxes, from floor to ceiling.

But these bioscpoe boxes were different from those which we saw in our childhood days in North Kolkata. These bioscope had fixed photos rather than the rotating ones as in older version.

But these are not ordinary bioscpe boxes but its a game. We are allowed to open only one lid and peep and if the photo is of a drink, you win a complimentary drink.

The few lucky windows are not located at eye level but either at the top or bottom. So either you have to crawl or get on your friend shoulder to be the lucky one.

But Hoppipola is not all about lottery based games and there are real games where the skill of the player is the sole parameter.

You can try your hands on a game of table football.

The glass wall and glass ceiling allow ample natural light to filter into the restaurant, thus creating a mesmerizing atmosphere.

The fish scale shaped partitions in blue and white add to the effect.

But the model planes, of all sizes, suspended from the ceiling creates the most dramatic effect.

But the most interesting part of Hoppipola is a quiet corner fitted with a circular book rack. Half of the racks contains books while the rest is filled with board games ranging from ludo to scrabble and from Chinese checker to chess.

A glow sign in the corner reads “it is always hoppi in the city of joy,” yes Hoppipola is making its presence in Kolkata.

Hoppipola is an Icelandic word, which literally means “jumping in puddles.” The restaurant believes in the philosophy that “people don’t have to be young to have fun.”

The interior may look a bit kiddish but as one settle downs one would want to bring the kid out of him.

Hoppipola is not just a restaurant, its a cafe, bar and play area all blended under a single roof and the ultimate place to be happy, rather hopi.

It not the decor and the experience but the food and drinks also has a share of surprise. Hoppipola doesn’t mean tradition means rules and the food is definitely not traditional.

The food is an interesting mix of cuisine from Italy, Mexico, America and the Orient but the dishes comes in with a distinctive Hopppipola twist.

The drinks are no exception and the cocktails of Hoppipola consists of an amazing mix of ingredients and is served in the most unusual and exotic manner.

Bird Cage, the most sought after cocktail in Hoppipola, is served in a bucket, placed inside a bird cage. 1000 ml white rum based drink is flavored with orange liqueur and contains chunks of pineapple, kiwi and hazel nuts. It serves about 3 to 4 people.

Served in a bulb shaped container the IQ is again a great example of Hoppipola’s unique packaging. The watermelon infused vodka based drink and is meant for one person.

Named after the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci, Da Vinci Tini will definitely bring out the artist in you. The glass becomes your canvas and the white and dark chocolates your paint. Paint with your heart and pour the espresso infused Vodka to complete the single serve drink.

If you are still thirsty for more tryout the Drown in a Bucket, it is a tequila based drink flavored with orange juice and rosemary. This comes in 400 ml and 1000 ml.

Hoppi Bath Tub is another of Hoppipola’s unique creation. The white rum based drink is flavored with burnt orange and crushed ginger. It is served with crushed ice along with a bottel of beer placed upside down.

Accompanying these unique cocktails are an amazing assortment of veg and non – veg snacks.

Harrissan Paneer is tandoori paneer dish served on a miniature string cot, again an innovation of experience called Hoppipola.

Hoppipola is not just innovative about packaging but also innovative about names. Smoking Carlos is a cigar styled wrap with a feeling of corn and jalapeno and is served with a fiery red coloured dip.

OMG, this mushroom stuffed cheesy deep fried nuggets are out of the world and the name is a perfect compliment of its taste.

The non – veg snacks were no much unique in taste or presentation but did have a interesting nomenclature. Fishful Thinking are just fish fingers while New Age Wing Man are chicken wings. Chicken Trilogy consists of six chicken satay in three different flavors and colours.

The main course at Hoppipola also had its share of surprise. The Spaghetti Agilo Alio, with its rich flavor and aroma, was studded with large chunks of bone less chicken. The dish also has a vegetarian version.

The Cup of Oriental is a Thai dish consisting of a bowl of rice along with chicken curry cooked in thick coconut milk and flavored with assortment of oriental herbs. It too has a vegetarian version.

The meal ended with a dessert of Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce, something more ordinary compared to the innovative standards of Hopipolla.

In fact the dessert section in Hopppola is very limited and needs to be upgraded with the Hopi touch.
